About me
I worked as an English teacher in a Nigerian school for about two years, after which I taught Literacy in Sweden for a year. Currently, I teach Literacy to Year 4 pupils at a British school. Having worked with the Nigerian, Swedish and British curriculum, I have a vast knowledge about teaching English to second language learners. In my teaching experience, I have found three approaches more relatable to the way I teach: These are the Communicative, Comprehension and the Affective-humanistic approaches to teaching. As an elementary-level teacher, I work with kids between the ages of 5 and 12. One of the characteristics of these learners is that they get bored quite easily and will be completely distracted if the lesson doesn’t involve some kind of game that puts them in control or involves music and colors. I prefer these approaches to others because it makes learning fun and keeps it interesting. I use scaffolding and lowering the affective filter techniques to teach. I use these techniques because scaffolding helps to provide support for my learner by breaking learning down into manageable chunks as he/she progresses towards stronger understanding and independence, while lowering the affective filter enables my learners become risk-takers as they manipulate language and helps them feel safe in making mistakes without judgment and frequent corrections. It also creates a room for them to feel empowered to interact and share their thoughts with me. I motivate my learners by trying not to overemphasize error correction. In other words, instead of correcting the learner, I model the correct use of the language. I am available to teach Literacy to children between the ages of 6 and 14, as well as candidates preparing for NCEE, WASSCE/SSCE, and UTME.
